Salaam Centre’s Contribution to Humanity
A Word from the Author
It is a matter of great privilege for me that Almighty Allah has bestowed on me the privilege to compile a book on the life, mission and achievements of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and bring forth the aspects of his life that are worthy of emulation for the mankind. May this be accepted by Allah, Ameen!
Focus of our endeavour in this book is to highlight those facets of his life and actions that deserve the utmost attention in a society and context like ours in this 21st century marked by social chaos, economic crisis, corruption in public life and extreme disharmony among human beings. It pinpoints all those teachings and actions from the persona of the Prophet that could ensure progress and salvation. So essentially, the book is more of a guide to moral rectitude and a charter of spiritual regeneration rather than being a biography with a chronological portrayal of the Prophet’s life. To this extent, this is a departure from a conventional life sketch.
The Holy Quran is the final testament from Almighty God and contains guidance for the humankind till eternity. Prophet Muhammad personified the guidance contained therein. The twain therefore serves to link all of us, the human beings, to God. If the Quran is the divine word and guidance, the Prophet’s life is a model that transformed the teachings into the persona. The book is neither an outcome of my passion to write a book nor the reflection of my study, which of course is very limited. The ‘Quran for All’ campaign by the Salaam Centre to convey the teachings of the Holy Quran to one and all proved to be the initial stimulant. It led me to do some study of the life of the Holy Prophet and pore over the intellectual works by a battery of erudite intellectuals. It sparked the urge for a book that could bring the life of the Holy Prophet to one and all, allay the misgivings about the Prophet in the minds of the non-Muslim brethren and purvey the life-changing message to the Muslims. Several Islamic scholars encouraged me to undertake the venture and late Maulana Riyazur Rahman Rashadi boosted the morale.
It is about three years ago that I collected a number of works on the topic and engaged myself in profound study and discussions with several leading scholars of Islam on the varied aspects of Prophet’s life. A good amount of notes that emerged from the exchanges spurred me into action. The initial document was sent to several referees across the country. These included Dr. Sheik Ali, former vice chancellor of Mangalore and Goa Universities; Rector of Nadwatul Ulama, Lucknow and President of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Maulana Rabe Hasani Nadwi; Maulana Abulbayan Hammad of Jamia Darussalam Umarabad; Dr. Qasim Rasool Ilyas, Editor, Urdu monthly Afkar e Milli; Parvaz Rehmani, editor, Biweekly Dawat; Prof. Md. Rafat, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi and chief editor Zindagi-e-Nau; Syed Tanveer Ahmed, editor, Karnataka Muslims Fortnightly, Bangalore went through the manuscript of the book. Their valuable opinion helped me to fine-tune the language and refine the content. Ms. Nigar Ataulla expertly edited the volume and lent it the final shape. The book is currently being translated into Urdu, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada.
The book highlights the extraordinary mentoring process and inspirational power of the Prophet which led to the creation of a band of great men and women whose replicas, or even the modicum of them, could not be recreated in later centuries. Nor could we expect it be born till the eternity. This could not have been possible from any personality other than the Prophet who was ordained to be the complete personification of the moral and ethical tenets of the Holy Quran. The Prophet not only laid down firm foundation and norms for intellectual reformation and spiritual regeneration, but trained and groomed a vast army of individuals who vied with each one other to emulaterather imitatethe Prophet’s model. It is this community of followers that today is known as Millat e Islamia or the community of followers of Allah.
The book graphically sketches the Prophet’s endeavour to mobilize the humanity towards virtues and arraign them against the forces of evil. The effort to highlight those facets, events and teachings of the Holy Prophet that provide guidance in today’s circumstances and context have been central while compiling this work.
The effort constitutes our desire and appeal to all readers of the book to voluntarily emulate these golden principles that transformed the humanity then and have the potential to turn it into an exemplary society even today. It is why most of the events and anecdotes carry analysis. It is all in the hope that the work provides relevance to the current age and context. The Prophet’s life is an open espousal of spirituality. He was a mentor whose teachings still constitute a beacon of guidance in the 21st century. He is a role model that needs to be followed today. He is a guide whose footsteps the humanity must follow to find salvation. Every action, every word, every silence of him warrants our attention, reflection and study by the humanity groping in darkness. We have intentionally made the chapters brief in order that the reader floats through the topics swiftly and with considerable ease. They are aided by the Quranic verses and allow the reader to reflect and relate to the contemporary realities. Our objective will be achieved if the reader could fathom the depths of the love of the Holy Prophet and himself deciphers the import and relevance of his actions for today’s ethical and social issues. The book addresses both Muslims and non-Muslims, is couched in current idiom and interweaves events and anecdotes from the Prophet’s life with principles that lit the path of guidance for the 1.7 billion Muslims of the world. It is expected that the book would in itself be yet another introduction to Islam.
